The curriculum

Pupils follow a broad general education covering all areas of the curriculum until the end of S3, with some opportunities in S2 for personalisation and choice.  On entering the Senior Phase, S4 pupils continue with the study of the 8 subjects chosen for study in S3, reducing to 5 in S5/6 to allow for further specialisation.

Throughout the BGE, all pupils continue to study English, Mathematics, Physical Education, Religious Education and Personal Support.  Pupils need to study a Modern Language, a Science, a Technology Subject and an expressive subject.  Most subjects are offered at National 5 with progression to Higher, or National 4 with progression towards National 5.

In S4 pupils will have the opportunity to ‘drop’ one of their subjects.  In S5/6 pupils study 5 subjects and have access to PE, RME and PS.  S6 pupils will follow a minimum of 4 subject choices or 3 if studying at AH level with one other timetabled opportunity.  It should be noted that individual subject choices may be restricted in some cases as a result of staffing and timetabling constraints.

S1–S3 classes are mixed ability.  Where possible, in some curricular areas, classes are broadly banded from S4-S6.

In order to further develop skills for learning, life and work, we also offer a range of wider achievement courses in S3 and Access to Industry courses in S5/6.
