RME @ PGS
RMPS and Philosophy; S3 Elective, National 4/5 and Higher
S3 Elective; Philosophy and Religion
The S3 Philosophy and Religion course is divided into 4 main areas:
Morality in the Modern World: The class will study the topic Medical Ethics. This will focus on moral issues that doctors, nurses and scientists are currently considering. You will focus particularly on the issues of euthanasia and the use of human embryos for scientific research. The philosophical questions debated will include: Is it ever right to kill a human being? When does human life begin?
Philosophical Questions: The class will study different issues that modern philosophers believe are important in the modern world. You will learn about the views of modern and ancient Philosophers and compare their ideas with both religious beliefs and current scientific theories. The Philosophical questions debated will include: Why does the universe exist? Has science replaced religion? Are humans free to make choices?
Critical Thinking: Humans like to argue and present their views about pretty much every subject that interests them. However, do they provide good reasons to back-up their ideas? This unit will teach you some important skills that will help you identify good and bad arguments that people often use and, most importantly, provide you with tools to help you become better at justifying your own views.
World Religion: All the world religions offer answers to questions about the meaning and purpose of life. They also have a significant impact on the world today. The Philosophical questions debated will include: How can I live as a true human? Are humans different from animals? Is there a purpose to life?
The course will include project work, interpreting information from DVDs and video clips, internet research, class debates, guest speakers, group work and trips.
As well as developing your knowledge and understanding of each topic you will also develop your higher order critical thinking skills such as:
